How to keep sawan somvar fast
Before Starting the Fast
1. Choose Mondays: Sawan Somvar fast is observed on Mondays during the Shravan month (July-August in Gregorian calendar). Choose the Mondays you intend to observe the fast.
2. Sankalp (Pledge): Before starting the fast, take a pledge (sankalp) in front of an idol or image of Lord Shiva. Dedicate yourself to observing the fast with utmost sincerity and devotion.
Day of the Fast:
1. Morning Rituals:
- **Early Bath**: Take a bath early in the morning before sunrise. This purifies the body and mind.
- **Wear Clean Clothes**: Dress in clean, preferably white or traditional attire.
2. **Food and Water Abstinence**: From sunrise to sunset, abstain from consuming food and water. Some people may choose to consume fruits or milk during the fast, but traditionally it involves complete fasting.
3. Devotional Practices:
Shiva Puja: Perform puja to Lord Shiva. Offer water, milk, bilva leaves (bael patra), flowers, and fruits to the Shiva Linga.
Mantra Chanting: Recite prayers and mantras dedicated to Lord Shiva, such as the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra or the Shiva Sahasranama.
Om Namah Shivaya : Chant the mantra "Om Namah Shivaya" throughout the day.
Read Vrat Katha: Listen to or read stories (katha) associated with Sawan Somvar Vrat to understand its significance.
4. Temple Visit (Optional): If possible, visit a Shiva temple and participate in the rituals conducted there. Offer prayers and seek blessings from Lord Shiva.
5. Breaking the Fast: The fast is traditionally broken after sunset. Offer prayers and gratitude to Lord Shiva. Break the fast with simple vegetarian food or with items traditionally offered to Lord Shiva, such as fruits, milk, or dishes like kheer.
### General Guidelines:
- **Intention and Devotion**: Maintain pure intentions and deep devotion towards Lord Shiva while observing the fast.
- **Stay Hydrated**: If health conditions or circumstances require, you may consume water or light liquids during the fast. Consult with a knowledgeable person or priest for guidance.
- **Continue Weekly**: Many devotees observe the Sawan Somvar fast every Monday of the Shravan month for its entire duration.
By following these steps with sincerity and dedication, you can observe the Sawan Somvar fast and seek the blessings of Lord Shiva during the auspicious month of Shravan.
